MOVIE CENSORSHIP: PROTECTING WHO FROM WHAT?

The coming of movies hundred years ago is the most worrisome intervention. Adult increased their worry, because it was new and potentially very dangerous. Societies started enacting laws protecting their people from the dangers of this new phenomenon (Film). Educational institutions, with the societies wanted to protect not only innocent children and young people but also uneducated and the very vulnerable and susceptible adults minds from the perilous influence that this forceful new medium could bring to the society.
A movie is a medium of enlightment and entertainment, a tool for social transformation. Pope Pius XI, while endorsing the legion of honour code observed that, movie speaks not to individuals but no multitudes and does so in circumstances, time, place, and surroundings which are the most apt to arouse unusual enthusiasm for good as well as far bad and to conduct that collective exaltation which as experience teaches us, may assume the most morbid form.
Movies are not really science, objective or really based on facts. They are political and moral message that need interpretation according to our own cultural and moral traditions. Movie therefore need control or censorship to ensure that only the desired effect is achieve at all time, the censorship business is a work in principle, it operate on a legal framework to control what people watch or play either in public or private especially negative aspect; decision are reached based on age limits for the visual impact and performances in movies to the viewers. Censorship officers have the power to refuse classification, restrain people of all age`s access to a certain movies.

What is then movie censorship?

There is no gainsaying that some images can be harmful particularly to the children who are vulnerable if allowed to view certain image without supervision. If this is done early it becomes traumatic, and if it is too late, their innocence will lead them in to the hands of dubious acts or strangers.
Movie censorship therefore is the assessment, examination of a motion picture for its possible moral, sociological and psychological impact and effects on the viewers (people of different age groups) in its total content and constituent parts, for the benefit of the larger society. This is not necessarily an effort to impose a restrictive value, judgment on the operators in the industry or their product.
To NFVCB, movie censorship is the censoring and classification and rating of movies/films and video works which are to be publicly exhibited or viewed at home. The underlying philosophy of this policy is the checking of effect and impact of films and video recording on the society, especially indecent, phonographic, criminally-oriented and violent ones (NFVCB publ. 1996:3).

What does movie censorship seek to protect?

Human beings naturally have instincts to protect those who are close and dear to them particularly children and vulnerable from hunger, doubtful things, hurting from feeling of disappointment, scary things. Apart from children movie censorship is aimed at protecting the whole society from crisis, visual abuse, violence, harmful visual etc.
Technological development has brought more harm than good to the youths; parents are becoming more exasperated than necessary, for things that are damaging to the souls of their children and the effects of those harmful visuals in movies to their neighbor or society in general.
